Diet in IC/BPS

Diet plays an important role in the management of  IC/BPS. Infact diet managment and counselling is one of the key ingredients to the successful management of IC/BPS and achievement of a reasonable quality of life.  Management of diet is highly personalized and doctors can only warn against and help you identify those food items which have been known to cause IC/BPS flare or sudden exaggeration in the symptoms of IC/BPS.

The common foods that IC patients should avoid are:
Beverages: Tea, Coffee, Alcohol
Vegetables: Tomato, Onions, Capsicum, Garlic
Fruits: Citrus Fruits, Berries
Desserts: Chocolates, Excessively sweet desserts
Animal Products: Curd, Mutton, Salami, Sausage
Spices: Clove, Cardamom, Chillies
Others: Processed Food especially Sauces and Pickles, Artificial sweeteners

These food items are a list that has most commonly been reported by IC/BPS patients to flare up the disease however you will need to create a list of food which is more personalized. Here is how you can do this:

  • Go through the existing list of IC/BPS trigger foods
  • Eliminate all suspicious items from your diet and try to adapt to a boiled vegetable diet for a couple of weeks
  • Slowly start adding items one by one to your diet to understand and find out what does not suit you
  • Eliminate the suspected item and keep adding new items one per week
